Updating Firefox when Bunsenlabs (Debian) refuses

Soooo, Slack announced months ago that, starting from March 1st 2023, it will no longer support Firefox version 91 and below.

I knew this, and planned to update way ahead of time, but.... you know. It is never urgent enough until the day is there (or even passed).

Problem is: apt refuses to upgrade my preferred browser and I have been stuck at 91-esr for months now.

I don't know if it is Debian its choice, or if my favourite flavour Bunsenlabs is forcing this (probably because I haven't upgraded to Beryllium yet), result is: I got to find a way around this.

Now here is what I did, it works for me but it might not be the best solution so suggestions are welcome:

Activating Windows XP after support has ended

So, although I am a Linux-user (since CrunchBang is no longer supported, I switched to BunsenLabs), from time to time I have to do some testing on a Windows-system.

The only OS that I have a genuine installation from, is a Windows XP CD that I once found lying next to a discarded desktop. The installation still works perfectly, the product key is all there, but as well know: Windows XP is no longer supported and after 30 days, you need to activate the copy by internet or phone (which is no longer possible).

Still, there is a solution:

Qt MySQL Driver

Next step in the project: get a databaseconnection to store / retrieve the data. Didn't go as smoothly as planned. The following short post is simply a reminder for future reference. Comments are welcome!

Qt in Windows Vista, MinGW and QJson (qt-google-maps)

I am having quite a rough week. For a project I am using the Google Maps API within C++-code. As I prefer to use a Linux environment but usually my clients use Windows, I have become a big fan of the Qt framework.

Detroit: A Vision of America’s Potential Future

Picture taken from The Guardian
Once the wealthiest city in America, known as the “arsenal of democracy,” Detroit was the fourth largest city in the U.S. in the 1960s with a population of two million. Now a microcosm of everything wrong with the American economy, Detroit has become nothing more than a devastated landscape of urban decay with a population of 714,000.

Unfortunately, Detroit is not alone. All across America cities are being devastated by their own collapsed manufacturing bases: Detroit: A Vision of America’s Potential Future (article from Economy In Crisis)

David Graeber on Bullshit Jobs

In the year 1930, John Maynard Keynes predicted that, by century’s end, technology would have advanced sufficiently that countries like Great Britain or the United States would have achieved a 15-hour work week.

Ubuntu Edge

Those who have been following me know that I am not a big fan of the whole smartphone craze, but still I am very amazed with what Ubuntu is up to. It seems to be an ultimate barrier between "computing" and "mobility" will be pushed and with a huge chunk of corwdfunding.

A phone that you can dock as a PC ? Multi-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage? Wow, that is impressive.

Have a look at the introduction video:

"Detroit's decline is a distinctively capitalist failure" - Richard Wolff

Interesting piece in The Guardian yesterday by Richard D. Wolff, Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Massachusetts:
"The auto industry Big Three were loyal only to shareholders, not the people of Detroit. The city was gutted by that social choice."

From the article by rt.com:

/me guilty as charged...

At the beginning of this month, Epipheo TV launched a very true video on the way we are bound to lose concentration through to excessive internet usage. I can definitely relate to this statement as I often find myself wasting too much time reading/viewing/clicking/browsing through articles/videos/links/images that are mostly very interesting (or entertaining) at the time, but resulting in finding myself spending more time in front of the computer screen without actually getting work done.

See the article itself.

Google Reader will retire on July 1, 2013

We have just announced on the Official Google Blog that we will soon retire Google Reader (the actual date is July 1, 2013). We know Reader has a devoted following who will be very sad to see it go. We’re sad too.

Onzichtbare hand, zei u? Vrije markt, zei u? Lokale economie, zei u?

Denemarken wil "vettaks" weer afschaffen
