Death Penalty report 2012

Last month, Amnesty International published its yearly report on the death penalty. If we exclude the figures of executions carried out in China ^(*), the number of (confirmed) executions is 682, which stays virtually unchanged from 2011 (676).

Once again, China, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the USA were the five biggest executioners in the world, next to them 16 other countries executed the death penalty last year.

"Although the global trend towards abolition remained strong, 2012 saw a disappointing resumption of executions in a number of countries, notably Gambia, India, Japan and Pakistan."

We have just announced on the Official Google Blog that we will soon retire Google Reader (the actual date is July 1, 2013). We know Reader has a devoted following who will be very sad to see it go. We’re sad too.

NRA belooft verzet tegen strengere wapenwet

De Amerikaanse vicepresident Joe Biden, die zich in opdracht van president Barack Obama buigt over maatregelen om de vrije verkoop van wapens aan banden te leggen, heeft met de machtige wapenlobby NRA overlegd over zijn voorstellen. "Geen wapens op school zou idioot zijn"

Wayne LaPierre (foto), topman van de National Rifle Associaton (NRA), verdedigt zijn voorstel om op elke school gewapende bewakers te zetten. Hij is dus niet onder de indruk van de kritiek. Volgens tellingen zijn in de VS sinds het drama in Newtown al zo'n 150 doden gevallen door wapengeweld. (bron: deredactie.be)

Verschillende blogs en activisten houden intussen bij hoeveel doden door kogels er al zijn gevallen in de VS sinds de schietpartij in Newtown zo'n 10 dagen geleden. De teller stond eergisteren op bijna 150 -bevestigde- doden. Ook andere tellingen komen min of meer op dat cijfer uit. (bron: deredactie.be)

Yesterday, Amnesty International published its yearly report on the death penalty. If we don't include the executions in China, 2011 counts 676 people executed, that is almost 150 more than in 2010 (527):

Deze post zal misschien een beetje macaber lijken. In een dood moment was ik aan het rondsurfen en kwam uit op de website van het Antwerpse Schoonselhof.

Op die website staat ook een lijst van symbolen gebruikt op grafmonumenten. Persoonlijk kende ik al verschillende van de christelijke gebruiken, maar ik was niet bekend met de Joodse gebruiken of de symbolen van de vrijmetselaars.

Veel van de symboliek zou ik zelfs als "mooi" kunnen bestempelen. Een krachtig teken vind ik bijvoorbeeld de gebroken zuil, wat staat voor het plotselinge afgebroken leven, of de deur die op een kier staat.
